About Linghams

Linghams bookshop has a long history on the Wirral and is a real asset to the local community. Mike and I were looking for something fun that would offer something essential to the community. Linghams became available and as they say, ‘the rest is history’…

I’m originally from Heswall, so it was an easy decision to up sticks from the Isle of Wight; (Mike had kidnapped me for a couple of years), and come back home. Mike is originally from Cambridge and always had a dream of running a book shop-cum-record store. We can now combine our great love of books and welcome customers new and old. Sue

What Linghams has to offer

We stock a wide range of books with many titles on display.

If there is a title you would like to order we can generally get customer orders within 24 hours, it’s not unusual for a book to be ordered at 4:30pm and be available by 10am the next morning. Books can be ordered over the phone or online.

If you want advice on your selection then please just ask; we all have our particular favourites and an extensive knowledge of wide range of books or genres, we even know what may be coming in the near future…

We also sell: - A wide range of children’s titles, see ‘Children Rule the World’ in our online shop.
- Young Adult titles
- A range of educational guides
- Exciting toys, games & puzzles
- Beautiful greetings cards & stationery
- And a unique selection of quality gifts

We’ve also created a real buzz around the Wirral with our fantastic ‘Author Events’ and ‘School Events’; where you get the opportunity to meet your book heroes and maybe get a signed copy and photo…

Everyone is welcome!

Meet the team

The Linghams staff work together as a team, different but complementary, each having unique responsibility for particular sections of the shop. If you`re looking for something specific, with any luck there will be a member of staff who has special knowledge about that subject.

Sue & MikeThe Owners

Sue and Mike have recently moved from the Isle of Wight to take over as owners of Linghams. Sue is originally from the Wirral and still has family and friends in the area. Both are avid readers and are very excited to be taking over this iconic shop.

Maggie has worked at Linghams for 18 years and what she doesn’t know about bookselling isn’t worth knowing. If you’re having trouble finding a book by a less well-known author or which has been out of print for a while , Maggie’s your woman. The cookery, health and travel sections are her speciality but she has a great knowledge of the whole shop.

Becky Manager

Becky joined us in April from West Kirby where she had been manager. She has worked at Linghams ever since she left school and brings huge enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the Heswall shop- one of the staff described her as whirling dervish! Ask her about general fiction, local books and biographies - or anything really.

Gill Children`s Section

After working in a local playgroup Gill has been managing the children’s section for many years and is the person to ask if you’re wondering what to buy a nephew for his birthday or a grandchild for a Christening present. A friend to many local families, she’s great at knowing which book is exactly right for which age group and reading ability, and is always to be found at the back till in her toy ‘kingdom’.

CaroleArt, Craft, Stationery and Gardening

Carole is our greetings card and wrapping paper buyer and has a fantastic eye for spotting unusual and attractive designs which can’t be found anywhere else. She also runs the art/craft/DIY section where we try to keep a tight rein on her to prevent her from spending the entire shop’s profits on ordering beautiful glossy books- but so far to no avail. Put us out of our agony and come and buy them!

KerrySchools Specialist (pictured right)

Kerry also came from the West Kirby shop and is now devoting her time to helping schools on the Wirral. Ask her about education guides, or, if you’re a teacher, have a chat with her about how she can help you with Book Fairs, Author Events and Open Evenings. She will do her best to arrange the best possible terms for you and is willing to deliver to schools within a reasonable distance of the shop.
